Los Angeles: Hollywood actress-filmmaker Angelina Jolie decided to part ways with husband Brad Pitt for the health of their family, says her attorney.
Angelina Jolie filed for divorce on Monday after two years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had been in a courtship of 10 years before tying the knot in 2014.
Sources said Jolie took the decision because she wasn't happy with Pitt's parenting ways. Her attorney stated, "This decision was made for the health of the family," the actress' attorney said. "She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time."
According to court documents obtained, Jolie, 41, has asked for physical custody of the couple's shared six children -- Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox -- and is requesting that Brad Pitt be granted visitation rights, reported People magazine.
In his statement, Brad Pitt said, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."
"Both Brad Pitt, 52, and Jolie care very much about their kids and there is sadness on both sides," a source close to the situation said.
Another insider said, "The divorce is a complete shock. They have definitely spent more time apart this year, but it's still a shock. They just celebrated their wedding anniversary together."
