In May, Richa Chadha announced her maiden international project Aaina, which sees her share screen space with British actor William Moseley of The Chronicles of Narnia (2010) fame. The India-UK co-production will be helmed by Markus Meedt, who has previously directed some shorts, including Anonymous (2017). Last week, Chadha headed to London to kick off the shoot. While the team has lined up a month-long schedule in the UK, it will be followed by multiple stints conducted across different locations in India.

Exploring foreign projects was on Chadha’s mind for a while. Having sifted through several scripts, she was moved by the drama that explores the deep impact of violence, in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “I had read a couple of scripts for international projects, but they didn’t seem the right fit. When Aaina came my way, I knew this was the one,” she says.

The actor, who has begun filming the drama, is excited about the new beginning it represents. “I have manifested a strong script for my international debut. The film is being shot in the UK [in parts]. They have a different working culture than ours. So, even with years of experience in the Indian movie industry, I am feeling like a fresher,” she grins. On home turf, the actor has Fukrey 3 and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi in the pipeline. She is also overseeing her maiden production, Girls Will Be Girls.
