Onir: I don’t need 100 crores

Onir

Filmmaker Onir's latest film 'We Are' based on the life of a queer Major, was recently rejected by the Defence ministry. Sharing his thoughts about the incident Onir told mid-day.com, "I was sad, not shocked. My story was based on a real person. Why are people not speaking up for me? Is it because my story does not incite hate? My story is a love story or is it because queer people don’t matter as much? Though my film was discussed in the parliament it didn't get much support. That also shows the double standards of the government. It's  a story inspired by real incidents that seeks equal rights for the community, why should it threaten anybody?"

Reacting to film that have potrayed the LGBTQIA+ community as characters to be mocked at, the filmmaker adds, "I would want to look back at my life and think that every brick I laid was positive and not a stone thrown at someone. I’d rather be a part of building something beautiful than contributing to violence and hatred. I don’t judge my work in reference to something else but a growth in my own life. As long as I can touch some lives, I’m happy, I don’t need 100 crores."
