Dream Girl 2 composers Manmeet and Harmeet Singh rely on simplicity to make music that can be “instantly added to playlists”

Meet brothers Manmeet and Harmeet Singh may have recreated several tracks in their career, but the chance to give a spin to their own number, they admit, doesn’t come by often. “For Dream Girl 2, they wanted us to recreate Dil ka telephone. We rewrote the song, and thankfully, it turned out well. There is an element of flamboyance in the film. So, we wanted to create upbeat and peppy music that people could dance to. You’ll also notice that in the other songs.

There’s a song that comes in the climax of the film, and we got Sunidhi Chauhan [to render it]. That’s an interesting Sufi number, but yet, it is peppy; one that you can dance to. This was originally a song that we had created for our label, but when we were given the narration, we realised this would resonate with [the viewers] in that situation,” says Manmeet, quick to add that they got director Raaj Shaandilya’s approval rather immediately.
Walking the fine line between creating a song that is interdigitated with the screenplay but still has “an independent value” required skills that the duo has learned from experience. “The director wants the narrative to be supported by the song. But, eventually, it is a song, and needs to have an independent value for a listener to download and store in his phone. If it is too close to the story, and there is no relatability for a listener, the song will just disappear,” says Harmeet.
Simplicity in their music, says Manmeet, is what makes their songs popular among listeners. “Given the number of songs that release nowadays, it is tough to get a listener’s attention. We try to keep our music easy and catchy so that one doesn’t need to listen to it five times to remember it. They can hear it two times, and know what it is all about. We don’t complicate it.” Jamnapaar is particularly special for Manmeet, given that this marks the debut of “my daughter [Samaaira Chandhoke], who is 15-years old”. “She has rendered the English portions of the song.”
