Attempts made by legendary film personalities to negotiate between FTII students and the central government have failed because the students have taken an "extremely hard line", Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore said on Thursday, insisting that his ministry had not been harsh with the students.

Rathore, who was addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters here, also said that systemic improvement is required at the Film and Television Institute of India.

"Unfortunately the students have taken an extremely hard line. We are ready to resolve all issues. We have had multiple talks with them. There have been innumerable back door negotiations with the students. Some of the legendary actors, directors, producers have negotiated on behalf of both, they have given up," Rathore said.

The strike by students of the Pune-based FTII over the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as chairman is nearing its 100th day with both the Information and Broadcasting ministry and the students failing to reach a compromise.

"We want to resolve it. We have not been harsh with the students at all. We have been extremely liberal with the students there. Unfortunately the students have taken an extremely hard line. We are ready to resolve all issues," he said.

Rathore, who first tried to dodge media queries on the issue, also pointed out to broader issues related to FTII, hinting that the issue of Chauhan's appointment was not the only aspect which needed focus.

"You must go into the detail of the FTII. And then you will understand better as to have they had any passing out ceremony for last 17 years. No, they have not. Similarly, there are innumerable issues. There are systemic improvements that are required," the minister said.
