Madhur Bhandarkar has kicked off his next project in Mumbai. Titled, Indu Sarkar, the political-drama is set against the backdrop of the 21-month Emergency period that the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had declared in 1975.

The title track, composed by Anu Malik and rendered by Bappi Lahiri, was recorded at an Andheri studio on Wednesday evening. Says Madhur, "Given that the mid '70s was the disco era, who better than the disco king to sing the song? Bappida had introduced the concept of synthesised songs in Bollywood, and it was used generously during that period."

Lahiri, who will be collaborating with both, the filmmaker and composer Anu Malik for the first time, says, "Madhur called me up and said that only I could render this song. People may question the place of a disco song in a film centered on the Emergency period, but it gels well with the era."

Prod the director on whether the film will also put the spotlight on the sterilisation programs that were prevalent during the era, and he asserts, with a smile, "All the controversial subjects will be covered."

Kirti Kulhari, who rose to fame as one of the three girls in the Taapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Pink, features in Indu Sarkar in a pivotal role.
"Casting for the other characters is underway," informs Madhur.
