I'll be home for Christmas: Amy Jackson

“Last year, I celebrated in Goa gorging on lobsters, prawns and fried fish.It was a different X’mas dinner altogether,” says the Liverpool gal. Amy, who’s back home for Christmas after two long years, talks to CS about celebrating the festival the British way:

We are familyu00a0
I am thrilled that I am home this Christmas. It is after two years that I am getting to spend festive time with my parents and sister. My entire family gets together on Christmas. My uncles, aunties and little cousins come over. Christmas Day is a very busy and chaotic one. But it’s a lot of fun. In the morning, we open our gifts, and eat the traditional mince pies and mulled wine. Then, we head to the kitchen to prepare the dinner. It’s an absolutely amazing time!u00a0

Tree talk
Back home in Liverpool, England we get our homes ready for Christmas by the first week of December. The wreaths are hung outside our doors, and the lights come out. My mom got the tree home but was waiting for me to return so that we could decorate it together. Generally, we put on some Mariah Carey songs or X’mas carols when we are decking it up.

Time to feast
My mom gets the turkey early in the morning and puts in the oven to roast. We have a lot of vegetables like potatoes, parsnips, broccoli, carrots and gravy to go with it. My mom’s a great cook and makes a fabulous traditional Christmas pudding with cream. I make the balls that are used to stuff the turkey. The table is laid out decked with candles, Christmas crackers in red, white and gold.

Down memory lane
When I was little, my elder sister helped me write letters for Santa Claus. I remember placing milk and cookies on my window for him. Later, I realised that Santa’s not for real (sighs). However, I refused to let that dampen my Christmas spirit. I remember one Christmas, my dad took us to Lake District. We stayed in a log cabin, made a bonfire and spent the evening looking at the lake. It was beautiful.

Boxing Day delights
In Liverpool, we have the tradition of all the boys going together to watch a football match the day after Christmas. My dad is a soccer fan and accompanies them. All of us girls head to a saloon/spa and get ourselves pampered all day long. Then in the evenings we go for drinks and a nice dinner. We wear new clothes too!u00a0
