Inspired by Indian miniature paintings of the Mughal dynasty, Aartivijay Gupta’s creations, which were showcased at the Lakme Fashion Week this year, are up for sale at the newly-launched luxury store Dvar
Q. How would you describe the creations you designed for Lakme Fashion Week for this year and what makes them wearable for the common man?
A. My creations were inspired by the Indian miniature paintings of the Mughal dynasty from 1600 BC to 1800 BC. They are artistic yet wearable. I have experimented with print elements on nets and used plain silhouettes. The collection includes A-line dresses, sarees and kaftans.

Q. What prompted you to use Indian miniature paintings in your designs?
A. I’m a student of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). As part of my fashion-designing course I was exposed to a lot of Indian history. I was always intrigued by miniature paintings as I felt they were a forgotten art in India. I wanted to incorporate them in my designs in a contemporary avatar.

Q. How long did it take for you to design this line and did you face any challenges?
A. It took me a month and a half to design the whole range. There were two main challenges. Firstly, to ensure that I make wearable outfits and secondly, to see that I could fit in one whole painting on one dress without breaking the pattern. I had to do justice to the paintings so that their beauty
is enhanced.
Q. What is your fashion mantra?
A. I’m a simple person. I like to dress in comfortable yet chic outfits. My wardrobe includes a lot of kurtas, kaftans and shirts. I can’t kill myself for fashion.
Q. Who are your favourite international and Indian designers?
A. I love Alexander McQueen. His style is indomitable. He transformed a simple ganji into a chic outfit. I also like Sabyasachi’s designs as they are wearable pieces of art.
Q. Are there any designs you would like to experiment with in the future?
A. I would like to mix prints with embroideries in such a way that neither overwhelms the other and make designs that I would wear personally.
