“I am so excited. It’s through this art gallery that I’ve met such amazing people.” Kalpana, who lost her husband in the 26/11 tragedy, says that the encouragement she received from her late husband has helped her achieve such heights. She talks to CS about wearing multiple hats of gallerist and artist:

My calling
After 13 years, my whole perception of seeing things has changed because I’ve met such interesting people on the way. That is what I was craving for. I was from a business family but there was so much art in me. Sometimes, one cannot recognise their own calling in life. When my husband gave me the opportunity, I could fulfill all my dreams. He told me the sky is the limit. He gave me so much encouragement and that’s why I’m here.

Growth stories
Even though I’m an artist, my more serious role is that of a gallerist. I’m blessed that God has given me the quality of appreciating other people’s work and of having an open mind. Maybe it’s because I’m self-taught in everything. As a gallerist, I do what I like. There is no fear in me. Earlier, I did not appreciate figurative work, but I started doing that when I opened my gallery. I’ve started appreciating all kinds of art and mediums. As an artist too, I’m self-taught, that’s the reason I can think out of the box. No doubt I’m late but at least, I’ve arrived with my own style. I’ve to do a lot, both as an artist and a gallerist. As an artist, I’m letting my ideas flow like a river. As a gallerist, I feel not enough has been done. I took a backseat for a couple of years but I understand my responsibilities and want to make up for it now.

Following her dreams
It took me three years to come out of the trauma after my husband passed away. We had many plans for the future. One dream was that of an art museum and the other was of charity in a big way. He had promised to fulfill these dreams of mine. Now, I will pursue them on my own.
