'Ishq Ke Parindey': Love in the city of Nawabs

What is Ishq Ke Parindey all about?
It is a musical love story set in Lucknow, which is also used as a character in the film. Love does not know any boundary is the theme of my film. It is a love story between an Indian Muslim boy and a Pakistani Muslim girl. The film talks about two lovers who are caught in the violence of communal disharmony and how they have to sacrifice their love.

Love stories are a dying genre in Bollywood. Why did you choose to make a film on love?
Whenever people talk about a love story they associate it with rebellion against society or parents. Love is a beautiful emotion that is almost spiritual. My story is more of a virgin romance, where love is conveyed through words and gestures. The music takes the love story forward. Shabina Khan has choreographed the songs in a truly expressive manner.

What have you learnt from your mentor, Subhash Ghai? Were you nervous, considering this is your directorial debut?
Subhashji made me understand that music is the inherent core of Indian cinema and that a song should take the story forward. He also stressed on characters that were close to real life. No, I wasn’t nervous because I have assisted on films before. However, the only thing with newcomers is that you need to guide, teach and encourage them simultaneously. I would also like to thank my presenter, Pawan Goel for showing so much confidence in my team and me.

How was the experience of working with newcomers?
The advantage of working with newcomers is that they don’t have an image. You can easily mould them into a character, which works well in case of love stories. Both my actors, Priyanka Mehta and Rishi Verma have worked really hard on their characters and given it their 100 per cent.

How was the experience of shooting in Lucknow?
Shooting in Lucknow was a fabulous experience. The local administration was very helpful. We have tried our best to capture its beauty.
