The young generation is always full of ambition and dedication to excel in their career goals and emerge successful.

National IAS Academy's Mr Sumanth Makam on what role graduation subjects play in the preparation of UPSC examinations.

In India, successfully clearing the Union Public Service Commission –UPSC examination is a major breakthrough and working as high-rank Government officials is a matter of prestige.

The UPSC exams are considered very cha lenging and demanding to clear, so preparations for them start very early, say during high school or graduation. An aspiring student will be confused about which stream to choose from Humanities – Arts, Science and Commerce.

Mr Sumanth Makam is one of the leading IAS mentors and trainers willingly guides aspiring candidates on which stream is the most helpful. As the founder of the National IAS Academy, which is one of the best IAS Coaching in Bangalore, he suggests, to begin with, reviewing the UPSC syllabus and understanding which subjects need to be emphasized.

The main breakdown of UPSC is as follows.

  • General Studies I: History, Geography
  • General Studies I: Polity, Public Administration
  • General Studies II: Economics, Ecology, Environment, Science & Tech
  • General Studies IV: Ethics (Philosophy/Psychology)

It is obvious that most humanities subjects, such as History, Geography, Public

Administration Polity, are included in both syllabus 1 and II of the UPSC examination; hence studying humanities during the early study years is advisable.

On the other hand, Economics, Philosophy, and Ethics are subjects covered in GS  II and IV, which are equally good to go but can also be studied extensively during graduation.

Another important factor to note here is that these humanities subjects are given weightage during the Prelims and Mains examinations. Similarly, the optional subject list is quite exhaustive, with most of them included in the Humanities stream. Students can also choose from these options subjects for their Civil Services Examination

Yet another helpful analysis will help students decide on which stream should they opt for having a better foundation for pursuing their UPSC dream. The past year's records reveal that more than 50% of the successful candidates were from Engineering while nearly 20% were from Humanities, followed by a mere 10 – 15% from life science and science streams.

This analysis reveals that the hard work, focus, and persevering effort that matters more while having foundational knowledge of the UPSC subjects makes things slightly smoother for them to study and prepare for the examination. This analysis also revealed that geography is yet another preferred subject, along with Public Administration and sociology.

Students who have opted for humanities are likely to be better prepared for the UPSC examination as they have already studied them during their school, and graduation years.

Despite taking science and engineering, students can cope with the UPSC sy labus and attempt the exams with good results. So, despite being from any stream, aspirants clear their exams by studying and seeking IAS coaching from reliable IAS coaching academies and experts.

There is usually a misconception among the aspirants regarding the marks scored by them in their graduation and backlogs in relation with the UPSC examination which is totally irrelevant. UPSC examination is not about retrospective analysis and it's more futuristic which takes only into account the amount of hardwork and consistency you contribute once you start your preparation.

High school and college students who have set their minds to clear UPSC examinations should feel confident about clearing them even if they have not taken the humanities stream. There are ample IAS coaching institutes across the country that provide comprehensive study material, coaching and mentoring to help them achieve their career goals.

On a concluding note, Mr Sumanth Makam shares valuable tips to help students prepare themselves for the challenges of the UPSC examination.

  • Study with dedication
  • Study the exam pattern properly Choose the right sources
  • Stay updated with the current affairs Plan your studies and revisions
  • Set goals
