Safe spaces for queer folks in non-LGBTQiA+ settings in Mumbai

Most of the queer people that Sunday mid-day spoke to suggested Cat Café Studio as one of the most queer-friendly places in Mumbai

"The first Pride was a riot" - this slogan echoes the origins of the gay rights movement, born out of the confrontations between the New York City Police and activists outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. Popularly known as the Stonewall Riots, the series of events marked a significant turning point in the fight for LGBTQiA+ rights.

In India, acceptance of homosexuality has grown considerably over the past decades, yet members of the queer community continue to face challenges from those who are yet to embrace them. This Pride month, the queer community reflects on the common places in Mumbai that offer a safe and welcoming environment for them.

‘No judgement for being us'

"I prefer going to antiSocial. The place organises scores of events hosted by people from the community. In my experience, the queer couples are not judged (for being themselves). In a lot of cafés, one may get the ‘side-eye' for even holding hands, which makes us conscious. But, antiSocial lets you enjoy your time without having to face any judgement from the staff or the other patrons…"

‘Gender & sexuality don't matter…'

"My go-to place is Saqi. I recommend this for many reasons - the affordability, the inclusive environment and the friendly and welcoming nature with which they greet their customers, regardless of their gender and sexual orientation is something that draws me to the place… They make their customers feel satisfied. Sexuality or gender don't matter there… The proximity of this place also makes it convenient for me to go there frequently. I also prefer Blue Tokai and Doolally in Khar, too. These places are queer-friendly, making it our constant hangout spot in the city."
