India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl against West Indies. Kyle Mayers and Brandon King opened for the hosts.

West Indies faced an early batting collapse. Hardik Pandya and debutant Mukesh Kumar set off the proceedings, dismissing Mayers and Alick Athanaze respectively. Shardul Thakur then bowled an in-cutter to dismiss Brandon King.

The West Indies could not stand up to the Indian spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav (4/6) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/37) who shared seven wickets between them, dismissing the remaining batters within 23 overs. Captain Shai Hope brought a ray of hope for the hosts but he was dismissed for 43, scoring most runs for WI on the day.

India rejigged their batting order to bring middle-order batters to the forefront. Ishan Kishan, who opened for India alongside Shubman Gill, was the top-scorer for the Men in Blue with 52 runs. Shubman Gill, continuing a disappointing form, was dismissed for seven runs.

Suryakumar Yadav played in his signature style, striking four boundaries and one six. Rohit Sharma eventually walked in at number seven to finish the chase. Performances from spinners Gudakesh Motie (2/26) and Yannic Cariah (1/35) seemed to be the only positives for West Indies.
