Despite consistently ranking among the top wicket-takers across multiple IPL seasons, the Purple Cap has remained elusive for the 30-year-old Bumrah. Last year, he made a solid start, having taken five wickets in four outings, with his best figures being a clinical 3 for 14 against Gujarat Titans.

As Mumbai seek to revive their season, Bumrah returns to Wankhede, a venue where he has traditionally performed well. Over 38 innings at the ground, he has bagged 43 wickets at an average of 26.34 and an economy of 7.60, with best figures of 3 for 15. Against RCB specifically at Wankhede, he has claimed 8 wickets in 6 innings at a tidy economy of 7.83

Bumrah made his IPL debut back in 2013 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, immediately announcing his arrival with a three-wicket haul. Since then, he has evolved into one of the premier bowlers in the tournament and the shortest format of the game. Over his IPL career, he has taken 155 wickets in 128 innings at a miserly economy rate of 7.31.

When it comes to facing RCB, Bumrah has proven to be a consistent threat, picking up 24 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 22.12 and a strike rate of 17.5. He has gone wicketless against them on seven occasions but has conceded over 40 runs just twice, showcasing his knack for control and economy even in high-pressure games.

Bumrah vs RCB key player matchups:

  • Virat Kohli: Dismissed 4 times; 4 for 140 in 92 balls (15 fours, 5 sixes, 33 dots)
  • Faf du Plessis: 0 for 61 in 38 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes, 14 dots)
  • Glenn Maxwell: Dismissed 5 times (including 4 for other franchises); 1 for 44 in 37 balls (7 fours, 0 sixes, 17 dots)
  • Dinesh Karthik: 0 for 61 in 35 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes, 10 dots)

After losing three of their first four games in the current IPL season, the Paltans are in desperate need of a resurgence, and Bumrah's comeback could be the catalyst. However, Mumbai Indians are expected to tread cautiously with his workload. If MI bat first, Bumrah is likely to be utilised as an Impact Player, so that the team could manage his return more effectively. He may be rotated during his spells, possibly fielding only in parts of the innings to prevent aggravation of the injury
