Digital arrest scams involve fraudsters impersonating government officials, using phone or video calls to deceive victims. These scammers typically accuse individuals of being involved in illegal activities, such as drug trafficking or handling suspicious packages. They create a sense of urgency and fear, often claiming that immediate action is required, which manipulates victims into complying with their demands. Scammers may request sensitive information, money for "bail," or even ask victims to download malicious software that can compromise their personal data. The absence of legitimate processes for arrests via phone or video allows these criminals to exploit public fear and confusion. Despite the clear warning from authorities, many fall prey to these tactics due to the high-stress situations presented by the scammers. Awareness and education about such fraudulent schemes are crucial for preventing these scams and protecting individuals from financial and emotional harm. PM Modi has warned Indians against this scam.
