Maharashtra: Cops identify 316 objectionable social posts in Beed, register 16 cases

316 objectionable posts on social media platforms have been identified by the police in Beed district, reported PTI on Tuesday. Additionally, the police has registered 16 offences in the last two months, a senior officer said on Tuesday.

As per the PTI report, police have been closely monitoring social media contents in Beed, where violence had erupted during the Maratha quota agitation and houses of some politicians were targeted.

"We have so far identified 316 posts on social media and deleted 263. We will trace those persons behind the rest 53 posts," Superintendent of Police Nandkumar Thakur told PTI.

Police have taken prohibitory action against 191 people and registered 16 offences, he added.

He said a majority of the social media posts are related to castes, indecent language, and morphing.

Police have shortlisted some of the active members and appropriate actions will be taken against them, reported PTI citing Thakur.

Notably, a video purportedly containing remarks against a particular community in the backdrop of tension between two caste groups in a village in Beed district has gone viral, prompting leaders of various political parties to appeal for peace.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis (BJP) and Ajit Pawar (NCP) have appealed for maintaining peace and avoiding such commentary.

FIR against BJP Leaders over social media post

An FIR has been registered against BJP president J P Nadda, party's IT cell head Amit Malviya and Karnataka unit chief B Y Vijayendra in connection with a social media post allegedly intimidating members of SC and ST community not to vote for a particular candidate, police said on Monday.

The action was taken following a complaint lodged by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) with the Election Commission and police on Sunday alleging violation of model code of conduct, they said. They were booked under the sections of Representation of People Act and section 505 (2) (Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) of the IPC, a senior police officer said.

In the complaint, KPCC cited a video uploaded on ‘X' by official account of Karnataka State BJP which, it alleged, is operated by Malviya, on instructions of Nadda, Vijayendra and Karnataka BJP, on May 4.
