A special CBI court has sentenced a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) scientist to jail for five years along with a hefty fine of Rs 1.10 lakh in a bribery case in Nagpur, officials said on Wednesday, reported news agency ANI.
The verdict was delivered in connection with a Rs 15,000 bribery case in Nagpur that surfaced back in 2015.
Bipin Jambholkar, the convict, was a Grade A scientific cadre officer who was a nodal officer for BIS Nagpur at the time of the incident, reported ANI.
Following a complaint, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case on March 9, 2015, against Jambolkar, who was serving as a Scientist-C (Lot Cell) at the BIS' Enforcement and Legal Activities.

After an investigation, the CBI had filed a chargesheet on February 26, 2016 against Bipin.
During the eight-year-long trial, the court examined 15 witnesses, and the CBI prosecutor submitted 91 documents plus other evidence that stood judicial scrutiny and resulted in the conviction of the accused, reported ANI.
"The Court, after trial, found the accused guilty and sentenced him accordingly. 15 witnesses were examined and 91 documents were exhibited by the prosecution during trial, which stood the test of trial, resulting in the conviction of the accused," the CBI said on Wednesday.
In another incident, A 45-year-old man lost his life when he resisted his drunk elder brother's attempt to attack their mother with a knife in Nagpur city, police said on Monday, reported PTI.
The accused, identified as Dilip Gokhale, has been arrested, reported PTI.
The incident occurred late Sunday night when Dilip (51) tried to attack his mother in an inebriated condition in their house in the Timki area, reported PTI.
"Dilip verbally abused his mother and took out a knife intending to harm her. His brother Gaurav Gokhale tried to restrain Dilip, but sustained a fatal injury to his throat," an official said, reported PTI.
Neighbours of the Gokhales alerted the Tehsil police. The injured man was rushed to Mayo Hospital by the police where he succumbed to his injuries.
Further investigation is underway.
