On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met business tycoon Ratan Tata. He was accompanied by his wife Riniki and daughter Sukanya.

Assam CM Sarma expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Ratan Tata and N Chandrasekharan for their trust in the state and paving the way for this transformative investment during discussions held in Mumbai.

Tata will be launching a Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor facility in the northeastern state which is poised to elevate Assam's status on the global semiconductor map and revolutionise the economic landscape of northeast India.

Anticipated to commence operations by 2025, the semiconductor facility holds the promise of generating significant economic opportunities and fostering growth in the region.

In a bid to empower youths from the Northeast, plans are underway to establish a Skill Development Centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, said Sarma.

The skill development centre will offer courses in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, and electronics, thus enabling local youths to secure employment opportunities within the Jagiroad unit, he added.

Sarma, in his post on X (formerly Twitter), said that 1,500 youths from Assam, particularly women, are undergoing training at Tata facilities in and around Bengaluru. The training will aid in positioning these individuals in leadership roles once the semiconductor facility becomes operational in 2025.

The establishment of the semiconductor facility is anticipated to have a multiplier effect on the local economy, creating a ripple effect of job creation and infrastructure development in Assam and the surrounding regions.
