BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal held meeting with ward officials, road engineers; directs them to inspect roads, map potholes and fill them at the earliest.

BMC has claimed that they have filled up more than 40,000 potholes since April, but continuous rains over the past few days have led to a resurgence.

All assistant municipal commissioners, road engineers and other engineers of ward officers have been asked to inspect city roads to identify and report potholes. These will then be mapped on the plans and fixed on priority.

There are 147 kms of roads in the city at various stages of work which are to be attended by the BMC roads department. Around 625 kms of roads are in defect liability period, which means the contractors are responsible for filling up the potholes.

On September 29, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had said that officials will face strict action if they don’t do their job of repairing roads properly and even government officials responsible for it will be punished for dereliction of duty.

The CM issued the warning after reviewing the condition of roads across the state.

Thackeray also said that upgraded technology should be used to fix bad roads and suggested that concrete roads should be laid in areas that suffer the most during monsoon.

The review by CM was necessitated after the Cabinet ministers raised concern over the bad state of roads, which includes the ones under the civic body’s jurisdiction and state and national highways as well.
