Two workers died after a glass-washing lift collapsed from the 17th floor of a recently built Worli high-rise, Avighna House, on Monday evening. The Worli police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in connection with the incident and are probing the matter.
"We received information about the lift collapse at 4.10 pm. A team rushed to the spot and found two injured persons. They were rushed to the BMC-run Nair hospital where both were declared dead on arrival," said Anil Koli, senior inspector of Worli police station.

The deceased have been identified as Noor Alam, 35, and Jaleel Ahmed, 24. Noor Mohammed, the brother of Noor Alam said, "We hail from Madhuban, Uttar Pradesh and had come to Mumbai five years ago. Avighna House has 19 floors and is a commercial building. No offices have been set up in it yet though. Ramesh Lokhande, a local resident, said, "There was a loud thud as if something big had fallen down. We rushed to the spot to find two persons inside the lift. Locals rush them to the hospital. A similar incident had occurred earlier where people were injured while carrying out painting work. But the cops didn't take any action" he alleged. "We await the Mumbai Fire Brigade and doctor's opinion. Based on their findings, we will take action," said DCP (Zone 3) Akbar Pathan.

Noor Alam was staying in Bhandup in a rented house with Noor Mohammed. Shamshad Alam, the deceased's cousin, said, "The watchman at the site informed Noor Mohammed about the incident. He has four kids who are staying at his native place. It is a very unfortunate incident and the family back home is still not aware of the incident."

The police tried to get in touch with Ahmed's family. The deceased's wife called him while the panchnama was being done. A police officer picked up, informing her that the youth had been injured, so as not to shock the family, and requested her to send a relative to Nair hospital or the Worli police station.
