Mumbai: BMC says no plan to make masks mandatory again, but experts advise people to opt for it

Masks in public places remain voluntary for now, as there hasn't been a significant rise in COVID cases in the city, unlike Delhi, said BMC. However, health experts have advised the public to continue taking the precautionary measure.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in the city dropped below 30 in the last week of March, but the figure increased over the past few days. On Monday, the city reported 34 cases. Cases have increased minutely, and it is not alarming, said BMC officials.

Additional Commissioner of the BMC Suresh Kakani said, "We are keeping a watch on the COVID-19 cases in Mumbai. Currently, there isn't a significant rise in infections, hence there is no need to reverse the decision on masks. People can wear one if they wish, but masks aren't mandatory as of now."

The state government made wearing of masks voluntary from April 2, but health experts have advised people to wear one. "Masks are personal shields of protection and people should wear one, as it is in their best interest," said Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of the state COVID task force.
