Mumbai: 13-year-old boy falls dead during PT class in Kandivali school

Kandivli school student had recovered from dengue 10 days ago; exact cause of death unknown, report on it is pending

A 13-year-old boy died during a physical training (PT) session at a school in Kandivli West on Monday. The police said that the boy had dengue 10 days ago and had since recovered, but the exact cause of death remains unknown. The Kandivli police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and commenced an investigation.

The boy has been identified as Om Sachin Gandecha, a resident of Gujarat, who was staying in Halai Balashram hostel of Shree RJ Makheja High School in Kandivli. Gandecha was a Std VIII student. According to a police officer, the incident occurred on Monday, October 9, while Gandecha was at PT class. The PT teacher, Santosh Sharma, was conducting the session on the school ground.

While the students were seated under a tree, Gandecha suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground. Sharma immediately fetched water and attempted to revive him, but Gandecha was unresponsive. He was rushed to a Kandivli-based hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Senior Inspector Sandeep Vishwasrao of Kandivli police station said, "We have registered an ADR in this matter. We received information that Gandecha had been suffering from dengue 10 days ago but had since recovered. We have sent the body for post-mortem and handed it over to his parents, who arrived from Gujarat. The report detailing the exact cause of death is still pending."
