India General Elections 2024: Mumbai votes! Final tally boosts turnout to 54 per cent

In keeping with its usual trend, Mumbai witnessed almost the same voting percentage as the previous elections. The final voting percentage increased by 2 per cent after recounting, adding postal ballots, and including people who cast their votes after 6 pm on Monday. According to the Election Commission of India, Mumbai recorded a turnout of 52.27 per cent on Monday, which improved to 53.98 per cent after recounting on Tuesday. This is slightly lower than in 2019, when the voting percentage was 55.38. The trend is similar to the last time in many ways, including higher turnout in the North constituency and lower turnout in the South constituency.

In the North constituency, where Congress's Bhushan Patil and BJP's Piyush Goyal were the main contestants, 57 per cent of voters turned out to select their candidates, down from 60 per cent in 2019. Similarly, in the South constituency, where Shiv Sena's Yamini Jadhav and UBT Sena's Arvind Sawant were in the fray, less than 50 per cent of voters turned out, showing the same apathy from the urban ultra-rich class. Even in earlier elections like 2019 or 2014, this constituency had lower turnout.

The North East constituency, which had a tight fight between Mihir Kotecha of BJP and Sanjay Dina Patil of Shiv Sena (UBT), had slightly above 54 per cent voting despite the significant standoff between political parties and a roadshow by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The North West constituency, comprising the Goregaon to Andheri area, is the only constituency that almost equalled the last election's voting mark. Shiv Sena candidate Ravindra Waikar was contesting against Sena (UBT)'s Amol Kirtikar in this constituency. In North Central, BJP's Ujjwal Nikam and Congress's Varsha Gaikwad were contesting, and it registered 52 per cent voting. South Central, where Anil Desai from UBT Sena and Rahul Shewale from Shiv Sena were contesting, also showed a similar trend to the last election.

Women also turned out in similar numbers. The percentage of women voting was similar to that of men in all constituencies, with around 55 per cent of men and 52 per cent of women turning out in the hot sun to select their MPs.
