COVID-19: Mumbai sees record 3,062 daily cases; Maharashtra again crosses 25,000 mark

Shattering past peaks, daily COVID cases crossed the 3,000 mark in Mumbai on Friday and remained above 25,000 across Maharashtra amid a second wave. The virus claimed 70 lives in the state in 24 hours.

The rising cases are threatening to overwhelm the civic body which has stepped up efforts to control the pandemic in the city through appeals and punitive measures.

Maharashtra recorded 25,681 new infections, taking the overall state tally to 24.22 lakh. There has been a slight increase in the daily mortality figures. So far, 53,208 people have succumbed to the coronavirus in the state.

New cases in Mumbai touched 3,062, surpassing Thursday's 2,877 daily infections, which was the highest since the pandemic began a year ago. Mumbai is witnessing a surge in the cases after numbers had declined for over three months.

In other municipalities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivali also saw an upsurge with 552, 391 and 644 daily positive cases respectively.

The doubling rate now stands at 124 days. Mumbai's overall growth rate has increased rapidly in the last one week to 0.56 per cent. The total count of positive cases recorded so far has raced to 3.55 lakh. To the dismay of the citizens, the active cases now stand at 20,140 in the city. The total number of active patients in the state is 17,7560.

The mortality rate of the state has remained steady at around 2.2 per cent. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state in 24 hours was 1,288. These deaths are the cases where patients were positive before testing negative but later died due to other complications.

According to official data, there were 70 COVID-related deaths in the state in 24 hours and the highest number fatalities - 10 - were recorded in Mumbai. MMR recorded a total of 19 deaths including Mumbai. Of the deaths in the city, civic officials said 8 patients were suffering from other ailments and 7 victims senior citizens.

The number of tests carried out so far in Mumbai is 36.62 lakhs. The state's recovery rate too has come down to 90.42 per cent, with 14,400 patients being discharged in 24 hours. Since March 2020, 1.80 crore samples have been tested of which 24.22 lakh have been found positive. That comes to a positivity ratio of 13.39 per cent.
