Clerk of Borivli ward office loses job for taking money to issue death certificates

The BMC has suspended the death registration clerk at the R/Central (Borivili) ward office who demanded money for issuing death certificates and copies.

The corporation received a complaint on Twitter (@mybmc) about an employee working under the R/Central ward who was asking for money. Taking immediate notice of this, as per the telephone order given by the Deputy Commissioner (Public Health), the Medical Health Officer went to Babhai Cemetery to verify the complaint.

As per the information given by the BMC officials, Santosh Tambe as a death registration clerk was working at Babhai Hindu Cemetery on January 17, 2022. At that time, Rajendra Kumar Krishnandas Kinariwala, 72, was brought to the cemetery for his last rites.

Shashank Rao, the complainant, asked Tambe for the death certificate. Tambe told him that it would cost Rs 100 for each copy. It is learned that he took Rs 500 for five copies. "The first copy of the death certificate is provided free of charge and thereafter, Rs 6 is charged for each photocopy," said an official. After an inquiry, Tambe was suspended from his duties.
