The accused, who have been identified as Harikant Shukla (54) and Sanjay Shukla (35), were arrested by the Ambernath police in Thane district on Wednesday. Harikant is an auto driver by profession.
According to the police, the crime was committed on Monday at around 12 pm, when the woman was on her way to the market. Harikant was passing by in his auto rickshaw. He offered to let her sit inside the auto, telling her that he would drive her to her husband, who works as a driver in Thane. The woman declined the offer.
Threatening to kill her, Harikant then forced her into the auto rickshaw. He then took her to his son-in-law's house in Buwapada, Ambernath (West). He left, only to return at 11 pm. Asking Harikant to wait outside the door, Sanjay raped her.
At 7 pm the next day, the woman managed to flee. She informed her husband and father-in-law what had happened. They took her to the Ambernath police station and registered an FIR against both the accused, who were then arrested on Wednesday.
"We have arrested Harikant and Sanjay on charges of rape and kidnapping. The court has remanded them in police custody for seven days," said investigating officer Prashant Sande. u00a0
