Over the last two months, the efforts put in by the Borivli police station to nab absconding accused have paid off, with the policemen standing first in the city by arresting the maximum number of such crooks in the shortest span of time. The officer who led this operation was assistant inspector Santosh Shelke. As per statistics made available by the Borivli police station, Shelke, who was transferred to Borivli police station in July 2017, arrested 17 absconding crooks and 10 wanted criminals in two months.

Officers from Borivli police station said they had to trace 73 absconders and several wanted criminals, which was a difficult task. "It was important to find these absconders. Until they are being traced, the cases against them are stuck in court and the matter remains pending forever," said Shelke, who had to find some criminals that had been wanted since 1986. But how did Shelke's team, comprising constables Harshad Tandel, Datta Shende, Kailash Meher, Nehru Patil and writer Ghag, go about arresting the accused? They first filtered the list with names of those who lived closer and had their complete address on record.
How did they do it?
"The team then visited their registered address and inquired about all the possible relatives or family members connected with the absconding accused. We alerted our informers, and in the meantime, some team members tried to get the Call Data Records of the accused from the mobile service providers," added Shelke. All of these efforts and strategies paid off in the end. Senior inspector Gunaji Sawant said, "It took a lot of effort, but all the hard work is now paying off. We want to reduce our list of [absconding] criminals and put all accused behind bars. The department has been recommended for rewards for its outstanding performance."
