Is someone killing the trees at IIT-Bombay?

Is someone trying to kill the trees inside IIT-Bombay Campus? A number of nature lovers have raised this question as it has been observed that at one location inside the campus, the trees are drying up. Taking a serious note of this, environmentalist Stalin D from NGO Vanashakti has written a letter to the IIT-Bombay authorities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Environment Secretary on Wednesday.

"We have observed that there are various trees at this one particular site at IIT-Bombay campus which are drying. The site appears to have been dumped with a lot of debris, and some of the huge trees on the site are dead and some are drying up. We only hope it is not an attempt to clear the land for construction of buildings, and we request you to remove the debris, revive the trees and plant new ones as compensation for the dead ones," read the letter.

The NGO has also clicked pictures of the site taken from the pipeline road above the site and the same have been forwarded to authorities. One of the photos clearly shows trees that have dried up.

Falguni Banerjee Naha, spokesperson for IIT-Bombay, said, "The estate office will revert after identifying and inspecting the site."
A highly placed source in the government who did not wish to be named told mid-day that there are some trees at a site in IIT-Bombay campus which are dying and a proper investigation regarding the same should be done.

On December 4, mid-day had done a story - Who's behind the destruction between Powai, Vihar lakes? - in which it was stated how green activists say there has been hill cutting, land filling and removal of vegetation in the eco-sensitive zone of the national park. This site is outside IIT-Bombay campus but is nearby.
