Organised for the first time in Sydney by the World Wide Fund and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, the event has scaled up since then with increasing number of individuals and organisations pledging their support in benefit of the environment.

Young Environmentalists Programme Trust in Mumbai has announced crystal trophies for the three buildings who switch off the most number of lights. "We felt this would be a great way to encourage people to participate.

We also have a candle-light vigil and famous violinist Sunita Bhuyan will be performing," says Elsie Gabriel, founder of the trust.

This year, Earth Hour has urged people to go beyond the hour. Some ways include switching off the lights when not needed, saving water, using reusable bags, letting the battery of gadgets drain fully before charging them, using only cloth bags, observing Earth Hour once a month, or forming groups and spreading awareness about climate change.
