Shah Rukh Khan's Pathan, Ranbir Kapoor's Brahmastra and other awaited films of 2022

Gehraiyaan

Back in 2006, when Karan Johar made Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna about infidelity, despite the commercial success, it was received with polarised reactions. 16 years later, Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan, produced by the same filmmaker, seems to be dealing with a similar theme. This time, with the audiences more evolved, the response should be a lot more balanced, if not overwhelming.

Prithviraj

Akshay Kumar is carrying the sentiment of nationalism without a hint of apology for the last six years. The glorious history of the country that was mostly unexplored is being discovered by writers who mostly think of Kumar to headline such subjects. The title gives away what character he dons this time. The canvas is magnanimous, albeit with a strong emotion of deja vu. Yet, to deny this YRF juggernaut its place in one of the most awaited films of the year maybe incorrect. He saved the box-office with Sooryavanshi last year. Time to be lucky for Bollywood again?

CirKus

Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty are like a house on fire and Simmba’s blazing performance (of both the character and the film) is proof of the same. The filmmaker has denied this is an adaptation of Gulzar’s unforgettable Angoor. It’s based in the 60s and to see Ranveer Singh in this space of the first time makes this one of the most awaited films of the year.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

For the first time since 2013, Sanjay Leela Bhansali goes beyond Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh and casts Alia Bhatt for the role of a young, naive girl sucked into the world of flesh trade. She goes on to become a dreaded name in the city and Kamathipura, a devastating world that later became her home. Alia dissolves into such aching narratives with conviction (Highway, Raazi), but with Bhansali, the stakes are high and the scale even higher.

Radhe Shyam

Prabhas and Pooja Hegde's tale of romance is all about astrology and audacious visual effects. This one looks like a potenital blockbuster. Prabhas fans shouldn't complain.

Brahmastra

This is a film in the making for over 8 years. It finally comes out on September 9. This is only Part 1, there are two more to go and the buzz is massive. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt team up for the first time and hopefully, for a blockbuster.

RRR

Due to the shutting down of cinemas, SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus won’t release on January 7 now. Fans were eager and excited to witness what lies in this grand world the filmmaker has envisioned. The wait just got longer.

Pathan

The last time the world saw Shah Rukh Khan on celluloid was in 2018 in Zero. The last time we saw him on social media was last year in September. There’s no official announcement about this film, and yet, fans are visibly excited to witness this action-packed entertainer that also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. But more than anything else, it will be a hopeful return to form for an actor who has had a rather tepid run at the ticket windows off late.

Shamshera

Ranbir Kapoor in and as, for the first time ever. This will be the second period drama by YRF in the same year. A production house that has established its legacy on sweeping romances and pulsating dramas is now entering into an oeuvre that was mostly reserved for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ashutosh Gowariker. Thugs of Hindostan may have failed, that doesn’t suppress or stop them from attempting the genre again. Ranbir Kapoor teams up with Sanjay Dutt in an intriguing case of casting after Sanju. The film is slated for a March 18 release.

Ek Villain Returns

After the success of Ek Villain, comes the spiritual sequel Ek Villain Returns. The anticipated sequel will see a big-bang Eid release. Ek Villain Returns is a Mohit Suri directorial and jointly produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar under the banners of Balaji Motion Pictures and T-Series. The action thriller features John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria in pivotal roles.

Salaar

From the producer and director of KGF Chapter 1 and KGF Chapter 2, comes yet another larger-than-life movie titled ‘Salaar’. Headlined by superstars Prabhas and Shruti Haasan, Salaar is a mass action-adventure film produced by Hombale Films. The Hombale Films production with producer Vijay Kiragandur is the third collaboration between director Prashanth Neel and the production house.

KGF Chapter 2

Following the big-bang success of KGF Chapter 1, the sequel of the 2018 film, KGF Chapter 2 is an upcoming Kannada period drama action film written and directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner Hombale Films. Given the rising popularity of south Indian films across the nation, this film is expected to be a smashing success. KGF Chapter 2 stars south Indian superstar Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon and Prakash Raj.

Shehzada

Kartik Aryan, Kriti Sanon team up again after Luka Chuppi for the remake of Allu Arjun's Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. This should be fun.

Laal Singh Chaddha

Aamir Khan couldn’t make it for Christmas 2020 or 2021 either. It’s April 14 for him this year. Attempting Forrest Gump for an Indian audience is tricky. For those who have seen may always choose the original, the ones who haven’t may find the narrative niche, but in Khan we trust.

Vikram Vedha

Inspiration from the South will continue in 2022 as well as Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan step into the shoes of Vijay Sethupathi and R. Madhavan in a game of cat-and-mouse and wits. To suit the sensibility of the Hindi film audience, the makers are likely to tweak the script and the characters, but Roshan and Khan pitied against one another should be a battle to look out for on September 30.
