Tracing Karan Johar's box-office record: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

The maverick filmmaker Karan Johar ended his 7-year-long hiatus with the glorious Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The film starring Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt opened to positive reviews and due to good word of mouth, it has set the cash counters ringing. The family entertainer is Karan's 7th directorial in his 25-year-long career.  Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani entered the 100-crore club in India in just 10 days. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was Karan Johar's debut directorial. Headlined by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji, it released in 1998. The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 10 crores

Reports state Kuch Kuch Hota Hai collected Rs. 65.1 crore in India whereas the worldwide gross collection was Rs. 91.09 crores

Karan Johar's second directorial was the star-studded Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). Given the grandeur, the film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 45 crores

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham was a successful film as it reportedly earned Rs. 77.29 crores in India and Rs. 119.29 crores worldwide

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was directed by Karan Johar in 2006. Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan were in the film. He reportedly created the film on a budget of Rs. 45 crores

Reports state Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna made Rs. 61.68 crores in India and Rs. 110.26 crores globally

Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was a memorable film and did good business in 2010. It was said to be made on a budget of Rs. 50 crores

My Name Is Khan did wonders at the box office. In India, the film reportedly collected Rs. 114.61 crores. Globally, it made Rs. 223.44 crores

Karan Johar called Student Of The Year (2012) his youngest film. Launching Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, he reportedly invested Rs. 59 crores in making the film

Reportedly, Student Of The Year earned Rs. 97.22 crores in India. The reported worldwide collection was Rs. 109.1 crores

Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) garnered attention. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, it was a film made on a budget of Rs. 50 crores, if reports are to be believed

Despite polarised views, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil reportedly earned Rs. 156.22 crores in India and Rs. 239.67 crores globally

Karan Johar will be completing 25 years in the industry in 2023. The celebration kickstarted with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs. 160 crores
