Born on June 14, 1955, Kirron Kher's birth name is Kiran Thakur Singh. A Jat Sikhni from Punjab, Kirron's father, Colonel Thakur Singh, was in the Army. She did her schooling and college in Chandigarh. Kirron has two sisters and had two brothers - one passed away at the age of two and the other Amardeep Singh Sandhu passed away at 43. If Kirron Kher wanted she could have been a badminton champ. "But that mantle was passed to my sister. My mom and sis played badminton together at state - level tournament when my sister was 11," said Kirron, further adding, "She was a vibrant woman of many talents. She was a painter. My brother, who passed away suddenly five years ago, inherited her talent for painting. My younger sister Kanwal inherited my mother's dexterity at the game of badminton. And I got my mother's flair for dramatics."

Kirron Kher's mother Diljit Thakar Singh passed away in 2009. She was 84. Remembering her mother, the actress recalled, "My mother was excellent at everything she did. She was a perfectionist. And not one of those parents who think their children is the best. If I wore chappals to go out she'd reprimand me and wonder why I wasn't wearing high heels. And on top of that, she was a very elegant dresser. At 5 feet 7 inches, she had the height to look royal in everything she wore. She had the most exquisite saree and jewellery collection. I think I've inherited her taste in clothes and jewellery."

In 2016, Kirron Kher's father Colonel Thakur Singh, passed away in Chandigarh. He was 103. Sharing the news on social media, Anupam Kher wrote, "Col. Thakur Singh, Kirron Ji's father departed for a better world this morning. He was one of the kindest persons I have ever met. Will miss him (sic)."

Anupam Kher is "the most romantic man I ever met in my life", revealed Kirron Kher at the launch of the actor's book The Best Thing About You Is You. "He used to be very romantic. He was the most romantic man I ever met in my life... and listening to songs, he would sing them to me rather than listening to them," said Kirron Kher

In 2013, Kirron Kher who was a guest on Comedy Nights with Kapil opened up about her love story with actor hubby Anupam Kher. "We used to call Anupam the group's opening batsman in college since he had several girlfriends and was very flirty. Sabko hasaa hasaa kar phasaa deta tha... mujhe bhi waise hi phasaya...we became friends first and before I knew it, I fell in love with my best friend," she stated

On being asked whether the romance in their relationship is still alive, "Dekho, romance toh over time does fizzle out... but till date, he's as loyal to me as he was when we first fell in love, and that's more than important."

She was also quick to add, "But we are total opposites... I'm a control freak and the organised one whereas he's the calm and forgetful one. I'm always fighting with him when he forgets to put the toothpaste cap back on or when he forgets to close the bedroom door."

Kirron Kher had once said in an interview, "Sikandar is blessed to have had him as his stepfather. He is very tender, loving and giving to Sikandar."

On the work front, Kirron Kher joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2009. She is now a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Chandigarh constituency. But Kirron doesn't like to be called a politician

"I am not a politician. I do not see myself as a politician. I see myself as somebody who is working for my city and fought (elections) to get one more seat to (Narendra) Modi ji. That is how see myself. I did not ask for the ticket. It was given to me and now I am here," Kirron said during the interaction

She is a national award-winning actress, feted for her performance in Rituparno Ghosh's Bariwali in 1999. She also enjoys judging the reality show India's Got Talent. Her notable films include Sardari Begum, Devdas, French-German production Khamosh Paani, Veer Zaara, Dostana and Rang De Basanti. Kirron's last Bollywood appearance was in Sonam Kapoor-starrer Khoobsurat, that released in 2014
