After becoming the first Indian to perform at the coveted EDM festival, Tomorrowland and play The Box at Ministry of Sound, London The Saturday Sessions, DJ Shaan is now the first from the country to be signed on by British record label, Virgin EMI Records.

His voice revealing his elation, the musician tells mid-day that it is his affection for Indian tunes that appealed to the minds behind the international label. "The subtle infusion of Indian elements is what they've appreciated. For instance, I love to play the flute, and they picked up on that. I've always tried to portray my culture and music in an international manner," he says.

A collaboration with the biggest names - Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Hardwell, Swedish House Maffia, Tiesto and the late Avicii - has made him appreciative of the toil they put into their tracks, layering the shortest portions of music with ample beats. "Some of these subtle sounds may sound insignificant [because they can drown under more prominent beats], but they play an important part when the track is composed. When a track is broken down, I'm amazed by the detail that goes into every second."

On home turf, Shaan is happy that music heads are increasingly pushing homegrown talent. His upcoming album, slated for a September release, will "feature talent from the country" - ones he has scouted from social media. He also promises collaborations in cinema. "I would love it if my song got picked up for Bollywood," he signs off.
