Serbian opens new season with thumping win over Ferrer to defend Mubadala World Tennis Championship title
Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Mubadala World Tennis Championship title on Saturday with a final victory over David Ferrer in Abu Dhabi.

Serbian Djokovic, who was playing his first tournament of the 2014 season, claimed a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ferrer at Zayed Sports City.u00a0Ferrer, who drew first blood breaking Djokovic in the fourth game to take au00a03-1 lead, could not consolidate his lead and the world No 2 won five points in a row to break back
immediately.
Ferrer found himself three break points down in the 11th game and saved the first with a delightful drop shot at the net.u00a0But Djokovic quickly bounced back to earn the break second time with a forehand smash to end a 22-shot rally before seeing out the set.u00a0From then on, it was all Djokovic, who wasted little time in wrapping up the match.
Third place for Nadal
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal responded from the defeat to beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the third-placed contest.
After an evenly fought first set, Tsonga fizzled out in the second set as Nadal stormed to take the game 6-3.
