St Teresa’s (Santacruz) and Don Bosco (Matunga) won the girls and boys U-16 titles respectively in the Uncle’s Kitchen-sponsored National Sports Day inter-school hockey tournament organised by Republicans Sports Club and supported by Mumbai Hockey Association Limited at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate on Wednesday.

The spirited St Teresa’s girls beat Duruelo Convent ‘A’ (Bandra) 1-0. Arya Kamble, 12, the baby of the team, and playing with the big girls for the first time, scored the crucial winning goal after picking up teammate Aasawari’s diagonal pass from the right in the second quarter.

Later, a dominant Don Bosco scored from two penalty corners in the first and second quarters to defeat St Stanislaus (Bandra) 2-0. Don Bosco dictated terms from the start and forced a penalty corner in the fourth minute. Rohan Varkhade trapped a weak clearance and quickly pushed the ball into the goal. The Stanislaus boys, who were under a lot of pressure, conceded another penalty corner towards the end of the first half. Bosco’s Suhaan Pawle was ideally placed to tap in a deflection following a scramble in front of the rival goal.
