"I felt as long as I am playing, we won't lose series in India": Ravindra Jadeja

The last time, Team India lost a Test series at home was 12 years ago and Ravindra Jadeja had made his Test debut. In 77 Test matches, he felt a sense of invincibility whenever he donned the Indian whites at home. Ravindra Jadeja claimed five wickets in the ongoing Mumbai Test match. After claiming a fifer, he said that his worst fear of losing a Test series at home has come true. "Firstly, I had this fear personally I had thought that I won't lose a series in India as long as I am playing. But that too has happened," he said after opening day's play in the third Test. Cricket is a great leveller and this humbling experience against the Black Caps and henceforth, he won't be "surprised" with anything. "We won 18 series (at home), I thought as long as I am playing Test cricket in India we won't lose a series but that has happened, so I am not surprised with anything (that is happening)," Jadeja said. "We have set the expectations really high. Since last 12 years we did not lose a single series. I think we have lost a total of five Test matches in which I played." Also Read: Anil Kumble calls Virat Kohli's run-out as "suicidal" "I think this is a good achievement but when you set such high expectations and lose a series, it stands out and that is what is happening." As the side has lost a Test series against New Zealand, Ravindra Jadeja feels that all 15 players should take responsibility for that. "When we win, we lift the trophy together. Now that we have lost the series, all 15 in the team will take the blame collectively," he said. Recapping India's innings on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test, in the last couple of overs, just when India appeared to be in control, fortune favoured the visitors, who seized the opportunity swiftly. As India looked set for a strong finish, they lost three wickets in the final two overs of the day, dramatically shifting the game's momentum. Ajaz Patel delivered a double-wicket maiden, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) and nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj (0) on consecutive balls. India's troubles deepened in the last over when Virat Kohli (4) was run out following a quick throw from Matt Henry, unable to cross the crease in time. Anil Kumble calls Virat Kohli's run-out as "suicidal"

Team India's legendary spinner Anil Kumble opened up Virat Kohli's dismissal by calling it suicidal. Team India will resume the play on day two with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 31 and one run, respectively. The hosts are still trailing by 149 runs. "You can't have this repeatedly happening in every game, so it's more than a concern at the moment. You had an opportunity to get inside with just one wicket down of Rohit Sharma. And then yes, Jaiswal gets out and the night watchman comes in and gets out first ball, then this (Kohli run-out)," said Anil Kumble while talking on Jio Cinema after end of play on Day 1. "Nobody expected the run-out. This was certainly not something that you expect of Virat Kohli getting run out in the last over or last few minutes of a day's play. And it was something that he just hit the shot and then went straight for a run, which is suicidal," the former cricketer added. Nicholas Pooran has thanked Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for showing faith in him. The franchise has retained him for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. After the franchise declared its retention list, Nicholas Pooran was one of the five players retained by them. Nicholas Pooran was retained by LSG for Rs. 21 crore, the joint second-highest retention price for the upcoming season, alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Virat Kohli. The four other LSG retentions were Ravi Bishnoi (Rs 11 crore), Mayank Yadav (Rs 11 crore), Mohsin Khan (Rs 4 crore) and Ayush Badoni (Rs 4 crore). "I'm just thankful and grateful for another year, another opportunity. I'm really thankful that LSG has given me required an opportunity to represent them again," Nicholas Pooran said in a video released by the franchise on its social media handles. "In 2023, they took a risk on me, and they took a chance, and I'm just really happy that I could contribute to the franchise becoming better. Obviously, we're still searching (for) that title." "Two years after, I'm really happy that they retained me, and they've shown so much trust in me. It really means a lot to me. I want to do everything possible to win. That's basically it." In the IPL 2024, Nicholas Pooran was the second-highest run-scorer for the franchise after skipper KL Rahul who scored 520 runs. The Trinidadian ended the season with 499 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 178.21, including three fifties. Besides thanking the LSG fans for their support, he admitted that he also tries to help the team by imparting his knowledge of the sport as and when required. "Our fans really came out and supported us last year, and that was really special. I'm looking forward to more support from our fans because they're the 12th man, and we just want to entertain them and make them happy. "Whatever influence I do have, I try to impart my knowledge as well, especially when it comes to the game. The end result is all about winning, and it's all about coming up with the best decision for LSG and becoming successful in 2025 and just moving on from there," said Pooran. With the five retentions, LSG possesses a purse of Rs 69 crore heading into the IPL Mega Auction, potentially happening this month. "Track has bounce but no pace off pitch if you don't use shoulder": Jadeja

Team India's Ravindra Jadeja is happy with his five-wicket haul in Test cricket but stated that bowling in humid conditions was indeed a hard work. Ravindra Jadeja's 14th five-wicket haul came after a brief period of lull as he looked menacing while mixing deliveries, pitching it on good length spots and letting the variable bounce and abrasive surface work in his favour. However, Jadeja's assessment of the track was also an indicator that possibly Ravichandran Ashwin has lost a bit of pace in his deliveries as it required more shoulder effort to get the zip off the surface. Also Read: IND vs NZ 3rd Test: India 86/4 at stumps on day one, trail New Zealand by 149 runs "I thought you need to mix and match (in terms of speed). The wicket has bounce but off the surface, the ball isn't taking off. Unless you put in a lot of shoulders and get the revs, it is difficult," Jadeja told Jio Cinema. "It was a special effort as it wasn't no easy to bowl in this heat. Even Washy (Washington Sundar) bowled well and everyone played their roles to perfection. Now our batters will need to perform collectively," Jadeja said. When asked whether he is aware of going past Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja said that he only checks statistics when a series is not on and he is at home. After losing three wickets, Ravindra Jadeja said that the first target on day two will be to bat well and score those 150 runs which will help them to get a lead in the first innings. Team India ended their first day with a score of 84 runs for the loss of four wickets. The hosts are still trailing by 149 runs after bowling out New Zealand for 235 runs in 65.4 overs. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are still unbeaten on the scores of 31 and one run, respectively. (With PTI Inputs)

Jasprit Bumrah (Pic: File Pic)

"I don't look at my overs as gold", says Jasprit Bumrah

Mumbai Indians lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah doesn't see his overs as gold, he just sees it as a responsibility that he has to carry out. The five-time Indian Premier League champions decided to retain their top four for IPL 2024. Along with Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav, the franchise also retained Tilak Varma. Ahead of the new season, Bumrah brought out the competitiveness hidden inside him and laid out their intentions of restoring their glory by taking a shot at lifting the IPL trophy. "So you have to accept the good with the bad. So whenever you win, you accept, you start from zero. So whenever you lose, you start from zero. That's the beauty of this sport. We have been successful in the past, and we know how to win championships," Bumrah said in a video posted by MI on its social media handles. "So, not to look at the championship now, look at yourself trying to rectify the mistakes and try to take on the positive. So, that is what has always worked first. I think that is something that we'll focus on, and, hopefully, with the positives, we'll get good results," he added. Also Read: IND vs NZ 3rd Test: Jadeja, Washington star as India bowl out NZ for 235 From introducing himself in 2016 to catching everyone's eye with his unorthodox action, Jasprit Bumrah has gone from strength to strength with his sheer class. Jasprit Bumrah came into the limelight when he dismissed stalwart Virat Kohli to claim his maiden scalp in the Indian Premier League. Trusting his ability, he never wanted to be just a cricketer. He always wants to contribute to the team's success whenever he takes on the field. "The winning mentality is always there because you're playing sport to win. If you are just there to participate, it doesn't really land up well, according to me. So for me, I have a lot of belief in my ability. That's always been the case when I was a child, and I didn't want to be just any cricketer. I wanted to contribute more. I wanted to do special things. I don't look at my overs as gold. I look at my overs as a responsibility," he remarked. Jasprit Bumrah joined Mumbai Indians when he was 19-year-old and was eager to learn things from the legends who donned the jersey back then. Years passed any the roles have reversed. Now Bumrah is the one who imparts the knowledge to the youngsters who come in looking to earn a name for themselves. "It feels good. I came here as a 19-year-old teenager, and now I'm going to turn 31. Now I have a son, so it has been a complete journey, and I'm happy that the journey is continuing, and no better feeling. When I came, all the legends of the game were here, and I used to ask a lot of questions," he said. "So, now, slowly, the road is changing, and a lot of youngsters are coming into our team who are eight years or nine years younger than me. So I always feel happy to help because I got a lot of help when I started, so I am always willing to help and always trying my best to contribute in whatever way I can, whenever I can," Jasprit Bumrah noted. Punjab Kings' Shashank Singh ready to build on breakthrough IPL season

In a testament to his impact in IPL 2024, Punjab Kings have retained Shashank Singh ahead of the upcoming mega auction. He is one of two players who will continue with the Punjab Kings, with the other being wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh. The decision comes from Shashank's impressive season, where he scored 354 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 164.65 and averaged 44.25, establishing himself as one of IPL's most reliable finishers. "I am extremely grateful to the franchise as they have given me an opportunity again and shown their faith in me. Having been in the circuit for the last five years, this opportunity they have given me is something I'll be forever grateful for. Now, it's my time to prove them right," Shashank said after the retentions were announced. Mahela Jayawardene (Pic: PTI)

Jayawardene weighs in on retentions and team strategy ahead of IPL 2025

Mahela Jayawardene, who returns as the head coach of Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2025, spoke to JioCinema about the thought process behind the retentions, senior players leading the way, dealing with expectations and excitement heading into the big auction as well as acknowledging where the team went wrong last season and doing a thorough analysis of the past few seasons. 'Four senior guys led the discussions about how we collectively move forward' We had extensive discussions. I think the four senior guys led those discussions. Obviously, what happened last season, as well as how we collectively move forward. I think that was crucial for us to align in that right direction. So coaching staff, owners, management, and these four guys, I mean, the direction came from them, what needs to be done, how it needs to go about. So, but that's the leadership as well. I know Hardik's being appointed captain. We had that conversation with them. So that was led by them. And obviously, Ro led the retention part and everyone agreed that Boom's, you know, being the best bowler in the world, and he's been very consistent. And we need to recognize that at the top. And then he wanted the other young Indians to be recognized and it was his call. So, all in all, it was brilliant to see that, you know, them leading that conversation and agreeing to everything. So it was quite easy for us. 'It’s about learnings for us' I think it's about learnings for us, understanding what went right, what went wrong. I think we need to learn from that. And that was part of the discussions that we had. We need to control things on the field and obviously then the off the field stuff will be handled quite easily. It was tough for us to perform on the field and everyone acknowledged that you know. We underperformed as a group. We need to make sure that we focus on on our preparation and our execution, that's key to us. It's a fantastic setup. These four or five guys have created history, I mean, they've got so many championships under their belt. They've got the experience, as long as they're leading this group in that direction, whoever we get in the auction, they will set an example for those guys as well. And we should be able to compete at that top level. Also Read: How T20 is altering Test match dynamics 'Preparing well has always been our mantra' I think the expectation is pressure on if you take on either side. So it's about us. We've always felt that our preparation, if we do our work, it's like kids in a school. If we do our homework, if we prepare ourselves well, the skill set that we have, the experience we have, will take care of things on the field. So we just need to focus on that. And I love these guys to go out there and play freely and add value to this group. I think that's been our mantra for many years, is our preparation. So if you do that, I think rather than thinking of the end result, I think we will get to where we need to be. 'Coach’s job is to keep the players balanced' I think it's a little bit of a balancing act. I think at an IPL level, it's more about managing the expectations of those guys as well. I mean, they need to be freed up, they will have different roles to play within the group and allowing them to do that. And it's about bringing the new group aligned to that, you know, structure of execution, and what we ask of them as well, especially the international players. We've had some really good experience guys in the past who did that for us. So we know that part. It's quite easy. These guys are experienced. They will lead them. But at the same time, we need to have that structure so that so that we don't derail whenever we see something. That's the coach's job to, you know, get back them on track make sure that they're focused on the job in hand, that the preparation is done, they don't go too high or too low. It's a long season so you need to keep them balanced, confident, relaxed. Those are things that we will focus on behind the scene and make sure that we give them the tools that they need to go out and execute out in the middle. Also Read: Could Rishabh Pant be the next star in CSK's yellow? Suresh Raina thinks so 'Retaining these five players gives us a lot of options' Absolutely, I think that was the hardest thing as well. I think all the guys, all the five guys who returned, we had a very deep conversation with our coaches, owners and all that. It was a tough decision. But I think with the big option, we needed options. Obviously, we can take RTM into that as well. So that gives us a bit more flexibility. I mean, what we were trying to do is to cover up spots. These five guys give us a lot of options in that space, in that playing level. So it gives us a lot of flexibility then going into the auction as well. It was a tough call because we had some really good talent. But let's see, let's see how the auction goes. But that was the thinking behind it.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Umpires step in after Sarfaraz Khan's relentless sledging, Rohit Sharma responds

Tensions escalated during the second session on the opening day of the IND vs NZ 3rd Test as Rohit Sharma was engaged in a heated exchange with on-field umpires at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The atmosphere became charged when New Zealand batsmen expressed their frustration over Sarfaraz Khan's sledging from his position at forward short-leg, prompting the umpires to intervene. The incident unfolded just before the 32nd over of New Zealand's first innings. India, led by Rohit Sharma, are looking to avoid a whitewash ahead of the hotly anticipated five Tests in Australia starting later this month. The hosts made one change from their 113-run loss in Pune, with Mohammed Siraj coming in for fellow quick Jasprit Bumrah, who is unwell. In response to the escalating situation, the umpires held a discussion with Khan, likely addressing his vocal commentary from short leg. Both Sharma and Virat Kohli joined the conversation, reflecting the seriousness of the matter. Also Read: India eye a 'batter' show at Wankhede!
