Azharuddin was reacting to Sourav Ganguly’s view that he would be surprised if Dhoni leads the Indian team in 2019 World Cup and backed Virat Kohli for the leadership role.
“It’s Ganguly’s personal opinion, but Dhoni has been India’s best ever captain. He has won major tournaments and got India to the No 1 position. People go through ups and downs. It’s okay if his currently form is not great, but he has been a pillar of strength for the youngsters in the team,” said Azhar, who has 99 Test caps to his name.

The cricketer-turned-politician added, “It totally depends on Dhoni, how fit he is mentally and physically. He needs to take into consideration how demanding the sport will be in future, but he should be give a chance to take a call on his retirement as he has served the country well,” the Hyderabadi said while speaking at an event in the city to announce young driver Nayan Chatterjee’s new association with Meco Motorsports.
