The Champions League Twenty20, which is set to commence today in the Garden City with Royal Challengers Bangalore facing Cape Cobras at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, is billed as the clash of T20 champions across the globe.
However, for most of the foreign teams participating in the tournament, it is also an opportunity to showcase their talent in order to earn a lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) contract.
"Definitely it is a stepping stone for the IPL," Cape Cobras all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt told MiD DAY yesterday. "Obviously, our first and main priority is to do well and perform for our team here. But I am sure if your perform here, it will hold you in good stead for an IPL contract."
His teammate Ryan Canning echoes his views. "Most definitely, that's an opportunity for a lot of younger guys in our squad. There are a couple of guys who have had IPL experience," wicketkeeper Canning said.
"It's an opportunity that all of us are looking to grab. First of all, we are striving for the Cape Cobras to do well and if we perform for the side, then obviously, greater rewards will come with regards to the IPL."
Kleinveldt, 26, who toured India with South Africa 'A' side two years ago, admits that the Champions League is the closest a player like him can get to have a feel of the IPL.
"This is probably the closest we can get to being a part of the IPL, especially the guys who didn't play in the IPL. So, we are looking forward to that," Kleinveldt added.
Despite losing skipper Graeme Smith to an injury, Cape Cobras still include three top players Jean-Paul Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs and Charl Langeveldt who have IPL experience.
Canning felt that their presence will certainly help the Cobras to excel in the Champions League.
"For a lot of us, it's the first time in India. So the presence of these guys will certainly help a great deal in making us comfortable."
As the Cobras will lock horns with Anil Kumble's men, not only the RCB bosses but also those from the other IPL franchisees will be keenly following the action ball by ball.
