Australia reached the tea break on day two of the second Test at 66 runs without loss, and faces a big task to match West Indies' impressive first innings at Adelaide Oval.

Shane Watson (42) and Simon Katich (21) made a bright start in response to the tourists' first innings of 451, which was brought to an end when Brendan Nash was bowled for 92 after lunch.

Earlier, Nash was dismissed eight runs short of his second Test century, ending a dogged fight from the touring batsmen.

Mitchell Johnson took innings-best figures of 3 for 105, while Doug Bollinger (2 for 67), Watson (2 for 57), Nathan Hauritz (2 for 111) and Peter Siddle (1 for 92) all shared in the joint success of the Australian attack.

Ravi Rampaul finished unbeaten on 40 in a valuable late contribution that more than defied his position at number 11 on the order, as the tourists added more than 100 to their overnight score.

Dwayne Bravo rode his luck on day one with a chancy 104, as the middle order defied impressive spells from Bollinger and Watson to reach stumps at 6 for 336.

West Indies' resistance continued on the second morning, as the tourists surpassed 400 and batted through to lunch.

They lost Darren Sammy on the first ball of the day but drew on the fighting spirit of Friday to reach the interval at 9 for 405.

Sammy was dismissed in the worst possible start when he failed to survive a challenge call and the right-hander was trapped lbw by Siddle for 44.

His partner-in-crime Nash went on to make the third half-century of West Indies' innings and dug his heels in to build a stodgy partnership with Sulieman Benn.

Benn (17) was the next man out and he suffered a similar fate to Sammy, losing a challenge appeal as Hauritz caught him plumb on the pads.

Kemar Roach's stay at the crease was brief - he feathered a Johnson delivery through to Brad Haddin for 2 and without a challenge play left he was unable to appeal what was perhaps an unlucky decision.

Meanwhile, umpire Mark Benson was taken ill overnight and has been replaced on the field by Asad Rauf.
