New York: An Indian-origin man has pleaded guilty to beating to death another Indian homeless man after he made disparaging remarks about his sister and faces 11 years in prison.

52-year-old Nermal Singh of Queens confessed to killing Gaswander Giani Singh, a homeless, in August 2011. Nermal pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter before Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder, who set the date for sentencing on October 2.

Holder indicated that he would be sentenced to 11 years in prison and five years' post-release supervision, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement. Nermal admitted to taking a three-foot-long plank of wood and slamming it into the head and face of Gaswander, who was lying in his sleeping bag on the street.

According to the criminal complaint, Nermal got enraged earlier in the day when the homeless man said disrespectful words about his mentally-challenged sister. The two men fought and the physical altercation was broken up by two passing police officers.
Later that night, still seething with anger, Nermal went to where Gaswander slept, woke him up and beat him to death.
