Brit Andy Wray suffered severe Trauma after working as a policeman for two years

Wray (32) had a mental breakdown two years after leaving the force when he became affected by memories of the terrible car crashes and suicides he had witnessed.

Blank slate

Wray, now a supermarket worker, set off to hospital feeling ill, and when he arrived he had forgotten his wife Jo (34), his daughter Chloe (3), and his whole life.

Now, nearly three years later, he still cannot recognise Jo or Chloe if they leave him for longer than 48 hours.

Amnesia: Andy Wray can't remember his wife and daughter if they leave him for over 48 hours

He said, "If Jo left me for longer than two days, I would walk past her in the street without knowing her."

Jo, who never leaves Andy except to go to work, said, "I love him as much as ever. But it's hard having 13 years of our history together just wiped out."

Doctors diagnosed Wray with dissociative amnesia, which means he has no medium term memory and cannot recall his wedding day, the day his daughter was born, or even who his parents are.

Although he still has some general knowledge such as historical events, the names of celebrities, and even how to drive a car, he has wiped out every personal memory from his life.

Now Wray has to carry a piece of paper with his name and address on it, in case he gets lost and cannot find his way home.

Docs say

Doctors explain that Wray had his memory "wiped" because of trauma caused by the stress of time in the force.

Specialists slowly helped him, using memory cards with photographs of his family, and encouraged him to start writing a diary each day to help him remember.

In one moving entry he wrote, "Today I met a little girl called Chloe and they say she is my eight-month-old daughter."
