An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude rattled southern Mexico on Friday night, with tremors felt as far as Mexico City.

However, there were no immediate reports of damage, as per the officials.

The earthquake occurred shortly after 11 p.m. local time near the town of Matias Romero in Oaxaca, at a depth of 67 miles (108 kilometers), according to the US Geological Survey.

"The civil defense agency in Oaxaca state is closely monitoring for any signs of damage," the official informed.

While strong shaking was experienced in Oaxaca's capital, seismic alarms were triggered in Mexico City, prompting residents to take to the streets, although the majority of areas did not feel significant shaking.

More details awaited.
