We stoop really low when we take from the differently abled

The DN Nagar police have booked one person for allegedly transferring a handicapped PCO booth at Santacruz to himself using fake documents after the death of the person who used to run it. The BMC’s K West licensing department also conducted an internal inquiry against the officers involved in the crime.

The deceased person’s wife had said that officials had visited the shop and conducted a verification, but they didn’t do their job properly and transferred her husband’s shop to someone else.

Fortunately, this has been investigated and the shop has gone back to the wife, but it shows us how this quota can be misused. There must be checking and double-checking with reference to the transfer of PCOs. If the spouse is unable to procure all documents, he or she must be helped so that the booth goes to the correct survivor. There are any number of people looking for loopholes and ready to gyp and take advantage of the little given to handicap people, so that they have an avenue for a livelihood.

We have evidence of people trying to either take advantage or enjoy the little ‘allowances’ given to the handicapped or differently abled. The most telling example, of course, is able-bodied people travelling in the space for the handicapped on our trains. There can be no better evidence than this, to illustrate how people do not have a conscience or care so little that they try and many times do succeed in usurping whatever little place there is for these persons. While we do not have handicapped parking slots like they do in the West, one has little doubt that the able-bodied would try to park there too, if there were dedicated spaces for such parking. It is shameful but it is true. That is the reason we must look sharp and authorities stay alert for such con attempts that cheat the system for the differently abled.
