Where India isn't shining

Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Bihar was forcibly brought to the attention of a lot of people online following news reports of prisoners beating doctor Buddhadev Singh to death inside Gopalganj jail. Someone called Abhishek Bhanushali wondered (in jest, obviously) if the state was trending because Lalu Prasad Yadav had just had another child, while a certain Agnivo pointed out how the words Bihar and Tihar rhyme. I think it's safe to assume Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will not be amused.

Twitter's other side
Social networking sometimes does more harm than good. Over the weekend, popular American singer Demi Lovato admitted to having engaged in self-harm and cutting her body in the past. This lead to a rash of comments made in extremely poor taste. For instance: 'Why did Demi cross the road? To get some razors.' Considering the star is just 18, psychologists may some day have to evaluate the damage Twitter can do to those struggling with issues of self-esteem.

Everybody hurts
The hashtag 'Nothing Hurts More Than ufffd' yielded mundane responses like 'stubbing your toe', 'giving love and getting none back' and 'reading retarded redundant tweets.' There were a few interesting ones though, like 'getting paid and becoming broke on the same day' and this, from a certain Tanya: 'realizing that your boyfriend likes boys.'

The last word
In the words of filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, 'celebrities are the ones who make life worth living as they symbolize a hope to reach to from amidst the ordinary people we are surrounded by (sic).' I wonder if this applies to students of cinema: Do they aspire to make films like Varma's? Sheer curiosity prompted me to check Aamir Khan's Twitter account. The usually vocal actor's last tweet, related to cricket, was dated August 16, 2010. Then again, he doesn't have a movie to promote at the moment, does he?
