The police have arrested a contractor for allegedly cheating a cooperative sugar factory in Maharashtra's Latur district of about Rs 7 lakh, an official said on Thursday, reported the PTI.


According to the PTI, Nitin Dnyandev Ingle, a resident of Solapur district in Maharashtra, had signed a contract with Manjara Cooperative Sugar Factory, located on the outskirts of Latur city, for sugarcane cutting in 2023.


While Ingle had received an advance payment of Rs 7 lakh, he allegedly failed to do the work and even did not return the money, the official said.


Acting on a complaint by the sugar factory, the police recently arrested Ingle. Latur Superintendent of Police Somay Munde had directed the MIDC police to take stern action against the accused, the official added, the news agency reported on Thursday.

ASHA workers duped with promise of government job in Latur

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested in Latur district of Maharashtra for allegedly cheating four ASHA (accredited social health activist) workers of more than Rs 24 lakh by promising to get them jobs in the state health department, police said on Wednesday, reported the PTI.

While Sudhir Karbhari was nabbed and remanded in police custody till Saturday, co-accused Shrikant Dasrao Shinde and Rajratan Ramrao Suryawanshi were absconding, said a police official, according to the PTI.

As per the complaint filed by Surekha Choudhary, an ASHA worker posted at Honali village in Deoni tehsil, between March 2021 and June 2024, the three accused collected a total of Rs 24.3 lakh from her and three other ASHA workers, promising to provide them jobs in the sub-divisional health department, the news agency reported on Wednesday.

The suspect also provided them fake appointment letters, she claimed.

Deoni police in Latur are conducting further probe.

In an another incident in Mumbai, the Kurar Police in Mumbai arrested a man suspected of allegedly defrauding an elderly woman on pretext of helping in securing a job at Film City, an official said.

According to the police, the suspect was identified as Vinodkumar Ramchandra Jaiswal, 29. He allegedly defrauded an elderly woman by making false promise. Jaiswal was arrested and later produced before a court.
