India records 21,257 new Covid-19 cases, 271 deaths

With 21,257 people testing positive for the novel Coronavirus in a day, India’s total tally rose to 3,39,15,569, while the number of active cases declined to 2,40,221, the lowest in 205 days, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data updated on Friday morning. The death toll has climbed to 4,50,127 with 271 new fatalities. 


Meanwhile, Delhi government employees and teachers who haven’t taken at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine will not be allowed to attend their offices and workplaces from October 16. The order has come from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Friday.


All such unvaccinated Delhi government employees, including teachers and frontline workers, will be treated as “on leave” till they get the jab, it stated. In Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said that the state will fully vaccinate 70 per cent of its eligible population by December-end. 


“The [Union health] minister assured us that he will give more [vaccines] if required. We have a stock of 51 lakh doses and a special drive is being undertaken. We are focusing on giving the second dose to people,” Bommai said.
