Monday’s vaccination figure highest since Covid-19 immunisation drive kicked off on January 16; daily infections drop to 88-day low of 53,256

More than 75 lakh vaccine doses were administered nationwide till the evening of Monday, when the revised vaccination guidelines came into effect, the Union health ministry said. It is the highest in a day since the vaccination drive started on January 16. The previous high was of over 48 lakh doses on April 1.

India’s cumulative Covid-19 vaccination coverage is now nearly 28.7 crore. According to the revised guidelines, vaccine doses provided free of cost by the Centre will be allocated to states and UTs based on criteria such as population, disease burden and the progress of vaccination, and all above the age of 18 will be eligible for the free shots.
Any wastage of vaccine will affect the allocation, they said. The Centre will now procure 75 per cent of the vaccines being produced in the country, and private hospitals can purchase the remaining 25 per cent. It had earlier asked the states to procure 25 per cent of the doses. But, Modi announced the new rules on June 8, after the Supreme Court pulled up the Centre over its initial vaccination policy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the Centre has decided to increase the pace of vaccination in July and August.
India logged 53,256 new cases, the lowest in 88 days, and 1,422 fatalities, the lowest in 65 days, in a span of 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Monday morning.
Lab uploaded data on ICMR even after contract ended
Recent investigations have revealed that Max Corporate, the private agency accused of irregularities in Covid-19 tests during the Kumbh Mela, continued to upload data on the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) portal even after its agreement with the Mela administration ended, police said on Monday.
While the contract ended in April, Max Corporate along with Dr Lalchandani Lab and Nalwa Laboratories kept uploading the test data on the ICMR portal till May 16.
DGP Ashok Kumar said, “I have instructed the Haridwar SSP that the SIT should investigate in depth whatever five to six serious points have come up in the RTPCR Testing Scam.”
Man gets 2 shots in 30 min
A man in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district was on Saturday given two doses of Covid-19 vaccine within 30 minutes, sources said on Monday. There was no adverse reaction. Prasanna Kumar Sahu, 51, of Raghupur village had taken his first shot at a temporary vaccination camp and was sitting for the observation when a nurse erroneously administered another dose, he said. The centre’s observer said the man was sitting at the vaccination room instead of the observation room. An enquiry has been initiated.
‘Delhi needed 3cr doses, got 57 lakh’
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said the Centre pressured officials in Delhi to publish ads in papers thanking it for providing free vaccines for all, while the city has got only 57 lakh doses so far against the requirement of 2.94 crore.
