The former president and founder member of the National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC), Gita Vir (76), breathed her last at the Ruby Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Rest In Peace: Gita Vir

“The patient was in a critical condition when she was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. We tried our best to save her, but she succumbed to severe head injuries at 12.30 pm on Sunday.” Dr Zirpe said that her family has expressed its willingness to donate her eyes.

Pioneer of the concept of ‘Mohalla Committee’ in the city, she was one of the earliest of the civic activists.

Born in Karachi, Vir initially shifted to Delhi, and eventually to Pune some 34 years ago. She took up issues related to illegal encroachment and garbage.

“For the past six months she had been complaining about debris, rubble, bricks and pipes being kept on the footpath as well as illegal hawkers occupying space, which is rightfully meant for pedestrians. Ironically, Gita was injured by pavement blocks that were piled on the footpath opposite her house,” said Satish Khot, president, NSCC,

According to the Koregaon Park police, the accident took place when Vir was crossing the road.

Senior PI Shivaji Kamble of Koregaon Park police station said that the impact of the collision was such that Vir landed face first on the road and sustained grievous injuries on her face and head. She was rushed to the Ruby Hospital and was undergoing treatment at its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but succumbed to her injuries yesterday afternoon.

“We have arrested the motorist for rash and negligent driving,” said Kamble. u00a0
