Stray dog attacks return to gnaw at BBMP's image

The image of the BBMP is being dogged by further damage as a spurt of attacks by strays hit a part of the city yesterday morning.

A dog was chased and killed after it dragged a three-year-old child and bit five others at Baggalagunte. Shock led to fury as the residents had approached the local BBMP officials several times last week to complain about the menace in the area. "We have been complaining to the BBMP zonal officers the whole of last week, but have received no response. Every time someone approached officials to file a complaint, they were sent away," said Nandakumar, a resident.

Frustrated by the civic body's inaction, residents chased the dog and bludgeoned it to death."The dog had dragged a three-year-old child and that's when it was chased and killed. The same dog had bitten five others earlier in the day and chased several others," said R Manjunath, another resident.

Turned away
To add salt to the wounds, government hospitals in the area refused point-blank to treat the victims citing lack of facilities to treat dog bites."I was bitten and my friends immediately rushed me to the hospital. We were shocked when the local government hospitals did not allow us to enter the premises as they did not have medicine for dog bites," said victim Ratnamma.

Meanwhile, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry Department of the BBMP Pervez Ahmed Piran was appraised by officials about then the incident. He said, "We have rounded up 20 stray dogs and if any of them are found to have rabies, we will put them to sleep," said Piran. Local BJP MLA S Muniraju00a0 also reached the area to pacify the furious crowd.
