Four people beat up constable, Srikant Waghavle, attached to Shivajinagar Police station up on Sunday evening after he prohibited them from bursting firecrackers outside a recreation hall where vote counting process for Credit Society elections was underway.
Refusal of permission to burst crackers enraged the four alleged supporters of Asha Shinde, one of the candidates for the elections. The group of four, included an ex cop Sidram Irkal, who beat Srikant up and tore his uniform.
According to Srikant, he was on bandobast duty at Shivajinagar Police Headquarters. Long before the results the elections were declared, the four including Irkal(42, Health Camp, Pandavnagar) Yallappa Mallapa Dhotre, Ravi Shyamrao Orse, Rajesh Jeting Irkal all residents of Wadarwadi started bursting fire crackers to which Waghavle objected.
The police arrested them under various sections of Indian Penal Code deterring a public servant from discharging his duties and voluntarily hurting and insulting him. According to cops Irkal was resigned from police service five years ago, and since then he was working for NCP.
